Harris has now completed a £9 million construction project to convert a warehouse in Dartford, Kent, into a new Home Shopping Centre for Bericote Properties on behalf of Asda.
The works reflect the increasing demand for “Home Shopping” and “Click & Collect” from online shoppers. Whilst this demand was initially accommodated by reliance on Asda’s traditional retail stores, the decision has been taken to create specific, dedicated, facilities.
An empty warehouse with a floor area of 16,000m2 in Dartford will be subject to structural modifications, infrastructure and fit-out works to accommodate the re-engineering of the existing three portal building to create a 11,000m2, two portal unit, including extensive new in-situ concrete piled foundations.
Such projects are referred to as “Dark Shopping” within the trade, as the lighting and advertising associated with the retail facilities used by the public are not relevant.
